Could the festival season be revived this year?
Based on the current situation, the program series of the Valley of Arts, Bánki lake Festival, VeszprémFest, and Gyula Castle Theater will all be held in summer, with the appropriate pandemic precautions.
After last year’s gap, the Valley of Arts celebrates its thirtieth birthday this year, with around 1,500 programs and 30 venues. The largest mixed media art festival in Hungary will be held in Kapolcs, Taliándörögd and Vigándpetend between July 23 and August 1. The festival is planning on further strengthening their green agenda, with a compost bin being placed for testing in the valley.
Organisers told Index that they are more cautious about the budget this year, as people are not as willing to book tickets as in previous years. Ten-day passes are already available, the prices of which increases according to when you buy it.
VeszprémFeszt will be held between August 17-21 this year. The organisers of the five-day music festival, which takes place in three venues, will announce the complete program by the first of May, which, in addition to the world-famous Tom Jones, will feature exclusively Hungarian artists.
In the other outdoor venue of the festival, the Jesuit Temple Garden, the audience can see three special classical music productions entitled VeszprémFest Classic.
The Gyula Castle Theater wanted to feature an extensive range in its program this year, from performances that attract crowds to pleasing theatrical connoisseurs between June 25 and August 19.
This year the Shakespeare Festival is organised only with Hungarian companies. The Katona József Theater will participate with Otello, the Comedy Theater with the Horse Knights, and the National Theater with Romeo and Juliet. There will also be a contemporary dance theatre Shakespeare adaptation this year.
The Bánkitó Festival is between July 8-10 this year. It will be held in Bánk, around the lake, the organisers said, who, despite the uncertain conditions, are confident that it will be possible for the event to be held safely in July.
“We have had many hard months, but luckily the super community of Bánkitó supported us with sincere patience and acceptance. Unfortunately, although the unpredictability of the situation hinders planning, we have the right scenarios for several different contingencies,”
said Kata Oláh, the festival’s managing director.
According to the organisers, visitors can prepare for a small event and familiar environment, although more modest in size than usual, but reminiscent of a house party atmosphere. This year’s music will be brought by Hungarian bands only.
After last year’s festival, many people decided to carry their tickets over to this year, and due to the very limited capacity, they will sell a small number of them this year.
